Peter Garland CB

Peter Garland was a career civil servant in the Department of Health for over 30 years. In a range of policy and management roles, he worked closely with eight Secretaries of State for Health from Sir Norman Fowler to Alan Milburn. In the mid 1990s, he had lead responsibility at official level for negotiating with Treasury on health and social care funding and for reporting to Ministers on the performance of the NHS. He was a main board director of the Department of Health and the NHS from 1999 until his retirement in 2003, first as Regional Director for Northern and Yorkshire region, and then as Director of Health and Social Care for the North. Since then, he has undertaken various health related work, including chairing a number of inquiries and reviews in both the NHS and the Department of Health and acting as interim chairman of a Foundation Trust to secure its recovery.

He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath for services to health in 2002.
