Staffordshire’s own Biddulph Primary Care Centre has been shortlisted for two accolades at this year’s Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) West Midlands Awards.
The 3,500 sqm state-of-the-art primary care centre, which is home to two GP practices, has been put forward for the awards by specialist healthcare property company Prime plc – the private sector partner in local LIFTCo Prima 200.
Its innovative ‘figure-of-eight’ design, which plays on the different heights of land across the site, and its thoughtful choice of materials inspired by the local area has earned the centre a place in the list of finalists for the ‘Design Through Innovation’ category.
The passion shown by the Biddulph community for the centre has also secured it a place on the ‘Community Benefit’ shortlist, with centre staff especially impressed with their workplace.
Centre Manager Margaret Pratt said: ‘It’s light, airy and modern and the response from patients has been very positive. For us, it’s a much improved working environment."
Bob Smaylen, Development Director at Prime said: “Biddulph Primary Care Centre is a landmark building in the heart of the town, which has delivered improved healthcare services to over 21,000 patients and been a catalyst for further redevelopment in the area.
"As we worked closely with the local community from the outset, there is a great sense of pride in what we were able to achieve together.
“The project is up against some stiff competition in the West Midlands but the primary care centre is a particularly innovative scheme which has revitalised the town centre site and had clear benefits for the local area, so we will have fingers crossed on the night for a win or two.”
The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property and construction, celebrating the achievements of professionals working in both the built and natural environment.
The primary care centre will compete against other new and regeneration projects from around the West Midlands.
If it wins either of the categories it is shortlisted for, the centre will go on to represent the West Midlands in the national RICS Awards in London, competing against projects from across the UK.
The regional RICS winners for the West Midlands will be announced at a special ceremony at Birmingham’s Town Hall on 21 May 2015.
Biddulph Primary Care Centre was commissioned by North Staffordshire Primary Care Trust and delivered by Prima 200 through the Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) programme - a public private partnership with Prime and Community Health Partnerships, who is also the centre’s Head Tenant.
