BRAHM LIFTCo - Bolton One First Phase of Pool and Fitness Complex is Complete

THE future of Bolton's skyline is taking shape.

A steel frame has been erected, meaning the first phase of construction on Bolton One, the town's new £30.6 million swimming pool, health and academic centre, has now been completed.

The main frame of the building, on the University of Bolton's Deane Campus, is already starting to dominate the Bolton skyline after being finished several weeks ahead of schedule.

Bolton One, which is due to open in early 2012, is an ambitious joint project between Bolton Council, NHS Bolton primary care trust and the University of Bolton.

It will house an eight-lane, 25-metre competition swimming pool with seating for 250 spectators, a therapeutic hydrotherapy pool for people with disabilities, a fitness suite, aerobics studio and community gym.

The swimming pool will be the first in Bolton town centre for more than a decade, since the closure of the ill-fated Water Place in 2002.

NHS Bolton, the primary care trust, will provide a "walk-in" service for patients and a diagnostic and treatment centre while the University of Bolton will manage clinical skills lab facilities, a rehabilitation suite with sports injury, exercise and conditioning clinics and a sports centre.

The new centre, which is being built by the Eric Wright Group, is one of the centre pieces of the 67 hectare Innovation Zone, which also includes the new college campus, which opened their doors to students last month.

Keith Davies, Bolton Council's director of development and regeneration, said: "It's great this important building is now well underway and providing a new addition to the skyline in Bolton.

"It demonstrates more than £30m of investment in the town and is sure to attract further investment in the area.

"It's also a significant landmark in the Innovation Zone and will sit alongside the newly opened Sixth Form College and Bolton College as part of an education hub in this part of Bolton."

Town Hall chiefs are keen to stress that Bolton One is a building for the whole community.

Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris said: "Bolton One is a vital building which will bring a new swimming pool and leisure facility to the town centre, as well as a health centre for all residents and facilities for students.

"It will be a building for all the community of Bolton and we want the community to know that they will be at the heart of all the services delivered from here."
