The development of a new purpose-built £14.7m health and community centre in Bransholme will start in January, after contracts were successfully exchanged this week.
The flagship building will house GP practices and a wide variety of other health and community services that are eagerly anticipating moving into the Goodhart Road-based building, in north Hull, when it becomes operational in 2012.
The scheme will be the eleventh such facility to be developed in the city by Citycare, a Hull based property development company that provides efficient solutions for the provision of public services across the Humber region.
The current health centre in Bransholme is too small and inflexible and therefore limits the range of services that can be provided in the area, but now residents in the north of the city can look forward to dramatically modernised primary care services.
The site for the new facility, in North Point Shopping Centre, will benefit from adjacency to the shopping centre with the highest footfall outside of the city centre. It is a major focus for retail and community activity, and will be an extremely convenient location for patients.
Alan Kane, centre manager at North Point Shopping Centre, believes the development kickstarts a new era for Bransholme. "With the exciting building work that is already underway here on the new Winifred Holtby and Tweendykes school, as part of Building Schools for the Future, and our own plans for the future expansion of the shopping centre, the development of such a modern health and community facility only further reinforces the fact that Bransholme is undergoing major redevelopment.
"North Point Shopping Centre is delighted to be working with Citycare, the developers of the new building, from the very beginning to ensure a close working relationship between all partners within the local area."
The new health centre is likely to house the following:
11 GP Practices (relocating GPs from the current health centre)
Public health services including stop smoking sessions, active lifestyle and weight management programmes
Audiology services for both adults and children
Community nursing teams
Sexual health/family planning clinics
Secondary care services, including anticoagulation, cardiac services, community midwives, dermatology, dietetics, gynaecology, orbital prosthesis, paediatric clinics, podiatry, retinal screening, urea breath testing, speech and language therapy
Occupational health services
A tea bar run by volunteers
A carers group and Citizen's Advice Bureau
Mental health services including counselling and improving access to psychological therapies
Substance Misuse Workers
Space for community group meetings and other multi-use spaces
Jo Barnes, chief executive of Citycare, said: "I am really thrilled that we have achieved financial close with NHS Hull on this fantastic new facility
"Following on from our recent community engagement events that took place in North Point Shopping Centre, enabling residents to get a sneak preview of what their building will look like, it was really clear to see that people living in Bransholme really want this facility.
"The new Bransholme Health Centre will become a hive of community activity and a beacon of success in terms of providing excellent primary health care services in a modern setting."
Kath Lavery, chair of NHS Hull, said: "We know that people living in Bransholme appreciate having access to health services in their local area. This new facility will enable us to continue providing a range of routine care services, as well as some more traditionally hospital-based services, closer to home and in more pleasant and comfortable surroundings than the existing health centre can offer.
"We are really excited to have reached agreement onthis particular development and look forward to seeing the new centre taking shape over the coming months."
