Coventry LIFTCo - £22.5m City Health Centre a Step Closer to Opening

Patients in Coventry are a step closer to benefiting from a variety of high quality health services from a central location, as work completes on the development of the city's new City of Coventry Health Centre.

Galliford Try Construction, through Coventry Care Partnerships has completed the construction work of the £22.5m five-storey building which covers over 10,000m², making it one of the largest Primary Care centres in England.

The deadline was agreed by partners back in Spring 2010 that completion of the building would be ready for Monday 14th November 2011 and this promise has been met, on time and on budget.

The new facility, which becomes fully operational on 9th January 2012, is opening to the public on Saturday 10th December from 11am till 3pm, to give people an idea of what the new facility will provide.

GPs, the Walk-in Centre and other services currently based at the current Coventry & Warwickshire hospital site, and services from other parts of the city, will be relocating through a phased transition of all services from the 16th December into the new building.

Alison Gingell, Chair of Arden Cluster, said: "I'm excited that we are another step closer to the opening of the new health centre and I know local people in the area will be pleased to know that we're nearly ready to open the building for them to start using services from January. I wish to thank Coventry Care Partnership, Galliford Try, patients groups and everyone who has been involved in making this project come alive." Rachel Newson, chief executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, said: "The quality of the care we provide is our top priority, and the facilities we use to deliver services from need to reflect this too. A wide range of health services will be available to local people in this fantastic new building, and we are really looking forward to moving in and making sure people can get the services they need in a modern, high quality, environment."

George Marsh, Chair of Coventry Care Partnership, said: "We're immensely proud of being here on this date to handover the City of Coventry Health Centre to NHS Coventry for commissioning, at a date which was agreed over 18 months ago. We believe it shows a real sense of what Coventry Care Partnership can deliver on; bringing together expertise by the public and private sector through working in partnership."

Sean Bowles, Business Unit Managing Director for Galliford Try Construction, said: "We're really pleased to be able to handover our third building to Coventry Care Partnership on time and on budget. Working alongside Coventry Care Partnership and NHS Coventry throughout the design and construction stages has enabled us to keep our practical completion date firm by working through solutions together to ensure the end date is met."

Construction of the five-storey centre was built through the Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT), the new facility will house local GP practices, a pharmacy and community health services. It will also become home to a range of frontline services, including the out-of-hours service currently provided by the Walk-in Centre and some services currently based at Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital.
