Oldham LIFT - Building a Healthier Future

Oldham LIFT - Building a Healthier Future - 18th May 2009

A key milestone in the development of Royton's new health and well-being centre will be celebrated this week - that will bring around 20,000 patients a step closer to the high quality health services they deserve.

A turf cutting ceremony is being held on May 1 that will mark the beginning of building work, following several weeks of site clearance.

The new centre, which is due to open late next year and is being built between the town hall and library, will replace the current Royton health centre.

It will provide a wide-range of services all under one roof. The ground floor of the three-storey building will be home to two GP practices, a pharmacy and information and services to help people stay healthy. Community nursing teams, a dental practice and specialised services, such as podiatry, audiology and minor procedures will be located on the first floor and the top floor will be reserved for office and staff space.

Riaz Ahmad, chair of NHS Oldham - the local primary care trust responsible for local NHS services, said: "This will be the latest in a network of developments to make sure people are getting the high quality health services they deserve, in the place they need it, to help them live longer, healthier and more active lives. We want people to have an NHS that they can be proud of."

John Kelly, is a Royton-based GP and, who will be moving into the new building, and champion of NHS Oldham's Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) - the partnership responsible for delivering many of Oldham's new developments. He said: "Providing a high quality service for patients is at the heart of everything we do. Modern and high quality buildings will help clinicians deliver the best possible health services to local people."

Neil Charlesworth, general manager of Community 1st Oldham Ltd, the company that is delivering the LIFT scheme, said: "It is exciting to see another development get underway that will see local people have access to top quality health services."
