Walkden Gateway in Salford has welcomed a statue of a Black Dog today, showing its support for the Mental Health Charity, Sane's latest campaign.
The 220kg fibreglass statue is on loan for three months from Sane to help raise awareness of mental health and to promote the Black Dog Ball, a local fundraising event taking place at Ellesmere Sports Club, M28 4RZ on 18 October.
The World Health Organisation predicts that by 2030 depression will be the world's most disabling condition. One in five people will experience depression at some point in their lives, and it underscores most mental illness.
The Black Dog has long been used as a metaphor for depression and Sane’s campaign aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage people to seek help early.
