Strategic Estate Planning

Supporting local healthcare improvements and saving money

The NHS is in the process of transforming services in line with the Five Year Forward View

A critical part of delivering this vision is the drive for a more efficient estate, to free resources, and a transformed estate from which to deliver new service models.

Driving system improvements and supporting service transformation

Community Health Partnerships (CHP) is working with customers across the NHS and wider public sector to develop and implement Local Strategic Estate plans that will drive system improvements and support service transformation as well as releasing capital from buildings that are no longer fit for purpose.

Holistic approach to estates planning

To ensure a truly holistic approach to estate planning, it is vital that Local Estates Strategy development includes primary, secondary and tertiary care providers.

Framework for commissioners

In June 2015, the Department of Health issued Local Estates Strategies: A Framework for Commissioners - outlining how Strategic Estates Planning will allow the NHS to:

  • Fully rationalise its estate
  • Maximise use of facilities
  • Deliver value for money
  • Enhance patients’ experiences.
